I like God because he adopted me as his child

Danny Fourie

… he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, …Ephesians 1:5

Proudly the couple stands in front of the altar. The radiant mother rocking the baby in her arms. The father cannot keep his eyes from the baby, admiring him. The love of these parents for their child is clear for all to see. Here and there in the church you can hear someone sniffing and others cannot hold back the tears of joy. This is a special day. For years, the couple prayed for a baby and now their prayer has been answered. Three weeks ago, the social worker called them and told them they could come and take their baby boy home ...

When talking to non-Christians about faith, you will often hear words like this: “I believe in something.” Non-Christians do believe in something, but they do not believe in the God of the Bible. As Christians we cannot prove the existence of God. What I indeed can say is that I do not believe in something. I believe in Someone. And not just anyone. I believe in God, the Creator of heaven and earth. And better yet, I believe that this God is my Father. He adopted me, Danny Fourie, as his own son.

How is this possible? That the “something” to which non-Christians refers is my own Father. It was always his intention that he would adopt us as his children, says Paul in Ephesians.

He also wants to be your Father. You only have to say you want to be his child and he will immediately take you. Yes, I know that there are people who cannot see God as their Father, because it reminds them of the deficiencies of their earthly father. But let your choice of God as a Father not depend on the man you call your biological father, the man who probably brought you more misery than joy. God is indeed a good Father – someone who loves you unconditionally.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that I can call you Father. Thank you that you have adopted me as your own child. Lead me every day. Amen
