Time to tidy up - 30 April 2025
Charlea Grey
These people know that the Lord will help them. Lord, You will give them rest and peace because they believe in You. Isaiah 26:3, English Bible for the Deaf
I don’t know about you, but for me, the first four months of the year have felt like a complete whirlwind. So many things have happened, both at work and in my personal life. Time and again, it feels like I blink and suddenly, it’s Friday again.
Along with the whirlwind, my head has become fuller and fuller. My thoughts these days are a jumble of worries, plans for the rest of the year and work tasks. But there are also layers of emotion. I’m experiencing joy over a new chapter on the horizon and excitement about a wonderful new project a friend and I are working on. However, deep inside, there’s also an overwhelming sadness over complicated relationships with people I love. It’s a lot to make sense of in just a few short months.
The other day, I realised: it’s time to declutter my mind. You know, to unpack the things that feel like chaos, sort through them and put them back in order again.
There’s a popular tidying-up show on Netflix. I love watching how people transform their messy homes and garages into neat, organised spaces, step by step. They keep the things that spark joy and let go of the things that are just taking up unnecessary space and cluttering the room.
That’s exactly what I need to do in my soul. But, I realised very quickly that I can’t do this without God. I need his guidance and grace to work through all my emotions and feelings.
Working through our worries, joys, sadness and struggles requires a listening ear that brings peace instead of more anxiety. It takes a Father who is willing to take the things you can no longer carry and sort them out for you. It takes forgiveness, grace and love. It takes being gentle with yourself.
Maybe the first four months of this year have been a rollercoaster for you, too, a merry-go-round spinning faster and faster. If you can, take a moment and breathe. Sort through the things weighing on you, because there are still eight months of 2025 ahead. Ask God to help you. I truly believe he is the best “tidy-up consultant” when it comes to matters of the heart and the messiness of life.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that I can turn to you when my mind and heart feel overwhelmed. Thank you for allowing me to bring my worries and my joys to you. Help me to hold onto what is good and place the things that bring me sorrow in your hands. Amen.
