Autumn: Don’t grow weary in doing good - 17 September 2025
Ewald Schmidt
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9, NIV
Autumn is that time of year when the trees shed their leaves, the days grow shorter, and the air carries a cool rustle. It is a season of change – a time of transition where the old makes way for the new. For many, autumn symbolises the middle or later years of life: a stage to look back on what has been and to look forward with hope to what is yet to come. It can also be a time of weariness, not only physically but emotionally and spiritually.
In this season of scaling down and giving back, Galatians 6:9 offers us a precious reminder: do not grow weary in doing good. This encouragement strikes at the heart of someone wondering if their efforts still matter. Perhaps you have served with love and dedication for many years – in your family, at work or in your church – and you ask yourself: “Is it still worth it?”
Paul says, “If we do not give up, at the right time we will reap a harvest.” Here lies the key: there is a right time for every harvest and it is God who determines that time. Autumn is the season of harvest – when the fruit of summer’s labour is gathered. Likewise, in our spiritual lives, there is a time when the Lord will reward your work; perhaps not immediately, but always in his time.
For the one in autumn who feels they have given everything but seen little in return, take heart. The seed you have sown in the lives of your children, friends, church and colleagues is not lost. God sees it. Every encouraging word, every sacrifice, every prayer, every act of love holds eternal value.
Autumn is not the end; it is preparation for the rest of winter and the emergence of new life in spring. God is faithful to complete the good work he began in you (Philippians 1:6).
So, keep doing good even when you feel tired. Rest when you must, but don’t give up. Rest is not weakness; it is part of God’s care for you. Your autumn is a season of fullness for God – a time of fruit ripened by a life of faith. And in his time, you will reap the harvest.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for encouraging me when I feel weary. Help me not to grow weary in doing good, even in the autumn season of my life. Give me new strength and remind me that you see every seed I sow in faith. I trust your timing, your promises and your grace. May my life continue to bear fruit for your glory. Amen.
