Autumn: A time to invest in the coming season’s success - 22 September 2025

Ewald Schmidt

And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. 2 Timothy 2:2. NIV

In the autumn of life, you begin to look back more than forward. You recall the years of work, service, struggle, faith and growth. You see the road you’ve walked, the grace that carried you and the lessons you had to learn – often the hard way. This is a season of maturity, wisdom and an important time to sow into the next generation.

Paul’s words to Timothy are not just for young leaders, but also for older believers who have a legacy to pass on. In 2 Timothy 2:2, Paul gives a simple yet powerful instruction: share the gospel and the truths of Christ with faithful people who will in turn teach others. This is discipleship in action. This is mentorship that keeps the church alive and thriving.

If you are in the autumn of your life, you carry a treasure of experience and insight. You may no longer have the energy of your thirties, but you have something more precious – spiritual maturity. Now is the time to use that richness to shape others. Who is the “Timothy” in your life? Is there a young believer you can encourage, equip and walk alongside? Someone you can teach to serve the Lord with perseverance, integrity and faith?

Autumn is not just a time to wind down, it’s a time to plant seeds. And those seeds are not just knowledge, but wisdom, character and a Christ-like way of living. When you share your faith journey – both the victories and the struggles – you pave the way for someone else. You don’t just offer advice; you show a path.

Older leaders in the faith, you have an irreplaceable role. You are the link between generations. When you raise younger leaders, you help keep God’s work alive well beyond your own time.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the season you have placed me in. Help me not to become passive, but to actively seek opportunities to teach and raise others. Show me the people whom I can pass on my faith journey to. Use my experience for your glory, and may I leave a legacy of faithfulness and devotion. Amen.
