Jesus among people: Be like a child - 4 December 2025
Andrea Sieberhagen
Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’ Matthew 19:14, NIV
As Jesus moved among the people, they brought little children to him, but his disciples wanted to send them away. In verse 14 we find Jesus’ response. He does not regard the children as insignificant. He welcomes them with open arms and blesses them. His words – that the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as them – should make us pause and reflect.
How can we be more like these children? I believe the answer lies in unconditional faith. A child’s faith does not ask many questions. As adults, we often come with arguments so clever that we reason away the core truths of God’s Word.
We do not have to understand everything completely. “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.” (1 Corinthians 13:12a)
These words tell us that we are not meant to fully understand everything in our lives or in the world around us. Why, then, do we try so hard to do so? We make it more difficult than it is.
Perhaps we should accept that sincere, childlike faith is all that God requires of us.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to believe like a child, and then take my hand and walk every step with me. Amen.
