Anchored in Him: True love - 13 February 2026

Lauren Appolis

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38, NIV

True love, when it is found and shared between two people, has the power to mark an entire life, shape a person’s being, and colour the world in deep shades of unexplainable joy, belonging, and delight – a reflection, in some measure, of God’s love for us.

Although it is still some time away, one day my daughter will ask me whether true love exists. I am grateful that I will be able to confidently tell her that it does. I will tell her that it is love that exists for every reason, and for no reason at all. It is when you look at another person, yet do not see them as you see the rest of the world. It is when you lock eyes, but it is really your souls recognising one another – and you feel it.

It is love that endures when life and its challenges throw everything they have at it in an attempt to break it, and still fail. Not even time – which can heal all things yet also has the power to erase – can undo it. It continues to exist in all its might. I am grateful that I will be able to assure her that true love is a gift, and that when it is found, it is not easily shaken. I can say this confidently, because I am blessed to know it for myself.

But I will also tell her that if this sounds like something worth having, there is something even greater.

While I pray that she experiences such love with a partner of God’s choosing one day, I pray far more fervently that she comes to know the magnitude of God’s love for her above all else. For while true love between mortals ends at “till death do us part,” not even death can separate us from the love of God.

No person can invalidate her from God's love. Nothing in the spiritual realm has that power. There is nothing in her past, present, or future – nothing in the sky above or the depths of the sea below – that could make God love her any less, or anymore, than he already does. There is not a single created thing that can stand against the love her Maker has for her.

Oh, how I hope she experiences true human love for all it has to offer. But more than anything, if my child comes to know the fierce, mighty, and mind-blowing love of God through Christ Jesus, then I know her heart will be filled with all it was created to hold.

May this be true for each one of us. May we fully bask in the splendour of God’s mighty love, until it overtakes our entire being.

His love is free to receive, free to accept. If you, beloved, have not yet come to the saving knowledge of Christ, I implore you to accept him as your Saviour without delay. As the Psalmist writes in Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your love that surpasses everything else in creation. I accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour, acknowledge that I am a sinner in need of a Saviour, repent of my sins, and commit my life to you. Let your mighty love take over my life. Amen.
