God’s goodness - 17 July 2026

Ruanne van Zyl

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise – the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. Hebrews 13:15, NIV

In the Old Testament, people brought sacrifices to the temple as an expression of worship and devotion. Today, God no longer requires animal sacrifices from us, but he still desires hearts that honour him. Hebrews 13:15 teaches us that through Jesus we are to continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God – the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge, confess and glorify his name.

A sacrifice of praise is special because it is not always born out of easy circumstances. The true test of gratitude comes when we choose to praise Him even during uncertainty, disappointment or difficulty. In those moments, our thanksgiving becomes a declaration of faith that says, “Lord, I trust you, even when I do not understand.”

When we praise God, we turn our attention away from our problems and toward his greatness. We remind ourselves of his faithfulness in the past and his promises for the future. The challenges we face may not disappear immediately, but we remember that God is greater than any obstacle before us and that his power is not limited by our circumstances.

There is also power in spoken gratitude. When we speak about God’s goodness, it not only strengthens our own faith but also the faith of those around us. A grateful word, a testimony of God’s provision, or a simple expression of praise can encourage someone else to find hope again. Thanksgiving has a way of spreading encouragement and reminding people that God is still at work.

The Lord is worthy of praise not only because of what he does, but because of who he is. He is loving, faithful, merciful, holy and unchanging. Even when our circumstances shift and change, his character remains the same. Because of this, there will always be reasons to be thankful.

Today, offer a sacrifice of praise to God. Thank him for his love, his presence, his protection and his provision. Praise him for the salvation you have received through Jesus Christ. Let gratitude become the language of your heart and the song of your life. As you do, you will discover the joy, peace and strength that flow from a life centred on worship and thanksgiving.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, today I offer you a sacrifice of praise. Thank you for your goodness, love and faithfulness in my life. Help me to praise you not only when things are going well, but in every circumstance. May my words and my life be a testimony of your greatness and grace. Fill my heart with sincere gratitude so that everything I do may bring honour and glory to your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
