But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 7, NIV

 

To walk in the light is a radical thing. It’s not a single decision made once, but a daily attitude – a willingness to be seen, searched, and changed by God who is, himself light, and in whom “there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)

 

Walking in the light begins with looking at ourselves through God’s lens rather than our own. Left to ourselves, we tend to measure our lives by comparison with others, to our own past mistakes, to whatever standard feels most forgiving at the time. But God’s light exposes what we might otherwise excuse or overlook. It asks us to see ourselves as he sees us – honestly.

 

That kind of seeing requires listening.

 

We learn to recognise God's still, small voice – not always dramatic, but continual – speaking through Scripture, through the quiet prompting of the Spirit, through creation itself, and through the people he places around us. Walking in the light means becoming attentive to his Presence, which is often gentle rather than forceful and easily missed by the heart too busy, or too noisy, to notice.

 

As we draw closer to his light, we become unavoidably aware of our own sinfulness and our need of him. This is conviction; the Holy Spirit’s gracious work of showing us where we’ve drifted away from him into the shadows, precisely so that we might return: “If we claim we have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not walk by the truth.” (1 John 1:6)

 

And so walking in the light becomes a life of prayer – submitting to him, searching out his ways rather than insisting on our own, and, again and again, asking his forgiveness when we fall short. 1 John 1:7 promises that, as we walk in the light the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin – fully. With that purification we are restored and experience the peace that nothing can shake and the quiet, returning joy of his salvation.

 

Walking in the light is a joy – not a burden; it’s the natural rhythm of a life lived close to God – alive to him – honest, attentive, repentant, and free. The alternative – fearfully walking in darkness, carrying our burdens, hiding from the truth, and further isolating us from God who is already waiting to forgive.

 

Prayer: All Highest, Glorious God, may I walk in your light today – honest before you, attentive to your voice, quick to confess when I have sinned. Purify me, restore me, and fill me again with the joy of your salvation, through Jesus Christ my Saviour, Amen.
