Fired up! - 2 October 2026

Leon Kluge’s work came onto my radar recently. He is the horticulturist and landscape designer who described how fire can be a catalyst for regeneration in fynbos, the indigenous plants of the Cape Floral Region, the tiniest of the world's six floral kingdoms. He stated, “Just like the fynbos, growth doesn’t stop because something was destroyed … it actually needs that disruption to restart. Seeds that couldn’t grow before suddenly can. … New life pushes through where it couldn’t before.”
I believe the same principle holds true for all of us who boldly accepted Jesus' command of “follow me”. We know only too well that trials and temptations are par for the course.
And as Christians, we are at war. The enemy of our souls wages an unrelenting battle. Sometimes, all we want is to escape this reality, watch TV and eat ice cream, or whatever else provides comfort.
For jaded souls, those for whom the first bloom of faith has faded, comfort presents unique danger. In a sense, it is the fire of life’s trials that allow us to deepen in our faith and walk with the Lord – the comfortable way rarely calls us closer.
Like the old timers of the Bible can attest, this time of testing often comes when we may be quite comfortable. Then BOOM! we hit obstacles and nothing goes swimmingly.
When it comes to the refining fire of God’s hand, we know that he purifies out of love. But there is nothing like the refiner’s fire to reveal what one is made of. Sometimes, we discover that we are not as faithful or resilient as we had believed. This is where we see ourselves as we truly are.
Have you found yourself in the refiner’s fire lately? Feeling a little bit discouraged? Well, you are not alone. Many a saint whom the Lord has used to advance his kingdom has had to endure sacrifices and difficulties.
And for those who had the singular privilege of walking with Jesus during his earthly sojourn, that privilege was accompanied by hardship. Next week, we examine the lives of Jesus’ earthly family specifically, and what having Jesus in their midst meant for them.
Prayer: Lord God, thank you for the refiner’s fire. Sometimes, it takes a fire to produce the purity you desire in our lives. May our lives glorify you. Amen.
