God gives breath - 6 November 2026

Benescke Janse van Rensburg

But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding.  Job 32:8, NIV

How long do you think you could hold your breath? One minute? Two? Maybe three?

Last year, on 14 June, Vitomir Maričić, a Croatian freediver set a new world record by holding his breath under water for an astonishing 29 minutes and 3 seconds!

Maričić spent nine months preparing for this challenge. But here is the fascinating part: Before going under the water, he spent approximately ten minutes breathing pure oxygen. This allowed his body to build up a greater supply of oxygen, enabling him to hold his breath for much longer. He beat his previous record by more than five minutes!

This remarkable story reminded me of the power of God's Word and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Just as Maričić prepared his body with oxygen beforehand, we also need to prepare ourselves spiritually for life's challenges.

None of us is immune to difficult times. The more we read God's Word, speak to him in prayer, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us, the more we learn to trust him when life’s pressures increase.

God's Word helps us distinguish truth from lies. The Holy Spirit guides us when we don't know which direction to take. And God's presence gives us the strength to keep going when our own strength begins to fail.

True wisdom and understanding do not come from our own abilities alone. It is God who opens our minds and helps us see things from his perspective. Moreover, Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would teach us and remind us of his words (John 14:26).

Perhaps you are facing a difficult decision today or you feel overwhelmed by everything happening in your life. Or maybe you are simply spiritually exhausted. Don't wait until you are spiritually out of breath before turning to God. Make time every day to catch your breath in his presence.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit. Help me to spend time in your Word and in your presence every day. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
