Winter: Perseverance in the difficult seasons of life - 26 September 2025
Ewald Schmidt
Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5, NIV
There are times in life that feel like winter – cold, dark and void of the visible promises of growth. These are times of loss, pain, uncertainty and a sense that God may have gone silent. These seasons often come unexpectedly. You find yourself in the middle of a storm and it feels as if every day is a struggle just to keep breathing. But it is precisely in these winter seasons that God does deep, quiet work in your life.
Paul’s words in Romans 5 offer a strange kind of comfort: “We glory in our sufferings.” Who in his right mind would want to boast about suffering? Yet, Paul teaches us that something precious happens when we not only endure hardship, but persevere through it – we keep believing, hoping and walking the path of life with the Lord. The suffering in our lives is not the end of the road; it’s the beginning of a process in which God shapes our character and deepens our faith.
First comes perseverance – that steadfast holding on, trusting God when you feel or see nothing. Then comes character – the proven depth of someone who has been through the fire but has not burned. And finally, hope emerges, not a superficial hope based on circumstances but a deep-rooted faith that God is good, even when the world around you feels dark.
This hope, Paul says, will never disappoint. Why not? Because it is anchored in God’s love, poured into your heart through the Holy Spirit. You are not alone in your winter. The Lord is there – not always as visible as in the summer’s sunshine, but present, near and rooting your life deeper in him.
Do not fear the winter. God is using it to prepare you for a new season of fruitfulness. Every tear, every sigh, every whispered prayer matters. He sees. He knows. He carries you; keep standing firm. Perseverance is not just survival, it is growth in silence. And when spring comes, you will be stronger, richer in faith and brighter in hope.
Prayer: Lord, I sometimes feel tired and discouraged in this season of hardship. Thank you for not leaving me. Help me to persevere, to hold on to you even when I don’t understand. Shape me through this time of tribulation. Let my hope not be put to shame, for your love is my anchor. Amen
