Lessons from motherhood 2: Which little trees are you watering? - 14 October 2025

Charlea Grey

'I am the Lord your God. I have brought you out of Egypt where you were slaves. You may not worship other gods. I am the only God. Exodus 20:2-3, The Bible for the Deaf

Life can sometimes feel overwhelming and full. What feels “full” and “overwhelming” will differ for each of us.

Some people thrive with an overloaded plate, while others simply can’t manage the same load.

Some people have help in the form of cleaning assistance, nannies, grandparents who can drive kids around or help with school events. Others are raising children with no support system and doing everything alone. Some of us work full-time and have long commutes, while others have the privilege of working from home. Some of us have multiple jobs to make ends meet or to chase other dreams. Then we still have to fit in regular exercise and don’t forget your marriage, friendships and all the administrative tasks of life!

We also all have different responsibilities. Perhaps you’re caring for an elderly parent or financially supporting family members.

Things can get a lot, can’t they?

But no matter how full and overwhelming your life is, there’s one question you might need to ask yourself regularly: Which little trees am I watering?

This year, I reached a point where I realised that I was struggling to attend to all the trees – there are simply too many. I either need to manage my time even better, or I need to have fewer trees. But I think you’ll agree, that is easier said than done.

One thing I’ve realised repeatedly is that there is one tree that constantly needs watering: my relationship with the Lord. I’ll admit, I neglect this tree too often. My excuse is usually a lack of time, exhaustion, or other priorities. Then my quiet time falls away, I rush through my prayers, or I just don’t get to church often enough.

I’m honest about this because it’s true.

And the irony? That is the one tree that should be the biggest and strongest. It is the tree that truly gives me shade and rest while I try to take care of all the others.

So, think about it today. Which little trees are you watering, and are you watering the right ones enough?

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you are always there for me. Help me to prioritise my relationship with you again. Amen.
