Seasons: The quiet, boring and predictable - 21 October 2025

I am telling you this, but not because I need anything. I have learned to be happy with what I have. Philippians 4:11, The Bible for the Deaf
Some people crave routine – doing the same thing repeatedly, following a familiar pattern. However, not everyone is like that. One thing’s for sure, though – we all crave a bit of excitement now and again. That’s just human.
Whether it’s the excitement of an upcoming holiday, a spontaneous outing, or a new phase of life – like falling in love and feeling butterflies in your stomach, or planning a wedding, moving into a new house, starting a new job, or getting ready for a new baby.
I love planning and anticipating events. Just the other day, I jokingly told a colleague that I had kids so I could throw children’s birthday parties. Of course, it was a joke, but I genuinely enjoy planning, researching and coming up with cute ideas for cakes and decor. These activities make life more interesting and exciting for me.
Of course, I realise that “interesting” and “exciting” are relative. What I find exciting may be dull and predictable to the next person.
The truth is, we all experience phases in life where things just aren’t exciting. Sometimes nothing happens. We work, take care of our homes, we’re caught in a routine and it doesn’t feel like we’re really moving forward.
That can be especially frustrating, discouraging and sad, when it feels like everyone else’s life is moving ahead, full of excitement and new challenges, while your own life feels stuck.
Perhaps you’re in a waiting season.
Unfortunately, I can’t reveal what awaits you on the other side, nor can I tell you how long it will last. But I can tell you that even when things feel boring, predictable or frustrating – God still has a plan for your life.
We can learn from Paul and concentrate on what we do have – whether it’s exciting or boring. We can practice being content in whatever season or phase we are in, remembering that it can change at any moment.
Prayer: Father, please help me to be content, even during the quieter times of my life. Please help me to see your grace and remain thankful for your presence in my life. Amen.
