Grateful for full forgiveness - 9 April 2026
Ewald Schmidt
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9, NIV
... as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12, NIV
The guilt of sin is a heavy burden. It does not remain only in the past; it clings to a person’s conscience. Some people carry old mistakes for years – words they wish they could take back, choices that caused harm, sins that hang over their identity like a shadow. Guilt whispers: “This is who you are. You are your failures.”
But the gospel contains liberating news: In Christ, full forgiveness is possible for us.
John does not write, “he might forgive.” He says, “he is faithful and just” to forgive us. God’s forgiveness is not determined by our emotions or on the intensity of our remorse, but on his character and on the finished work of Jesus. Because Christ bore the punishment, God is just when he forgives. The debt has not simply been ignored; it has been fully paid.
Notice the word “all.” He forgives all our sins and purifies us from all unrighteousness. There is no sin too great for the blood of Christ and there is no failure beyond his grace. When God forgives, he does not do so half-heartedly. He does not keep a record somewhere for later.
Psalm 103 uses a beautiful image: “As far as the east is from the west …” If you travel with a compass around the globe, east and west never meet. You can travel east without ever arriving in the west. That is how completely God removes our transgressions. He does not merely push them aside or cover them up slightly aside – he takes them away.
This does not mean sin no longer matters. On the contrary, we must confess it honestly; we do not make excuses. But we do not remain stuck in it. Guilt no longer has to define me. My identity is not rooted in what I have done wrong, but in what Christ has done right.
Gratitude for full forgiveness brings freedom. I no longer have to hide in shame like Adam did in the garden of Eden. I may approach the Father with confidence. I do not have to keep punishing myself for what God has already forgiven.
When the enemy accuses me, I point to the cross. When my conscience reminds me of old sins, the Holy Spirit reminds me of an empty tomb. In Christ, I am clean – truly clean.
This also changes how I forgive others. Those who have received deep grace cannot treat grace lightly.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for full forgiveness in Jesus Christ. Thank you that you have removed my sins as far as the east is from the west. Help me to live today in the freedom of your grace and to forgive others as you have forgiven me. Amen
