Thankful for justification: I have been declared righteous! - 10 April 2026

Ewald Schmidt

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ ... Romans 5:1, NIV

As a pastor, I often deal with people’s fears and questions, especially near the end of their lives. People wonder, “Have I really lived well enough?” or “Will God forgive me if I fall into that same mistake again?” That is how the human heart tends to work: we measure our peace with God by how we feel or by what we try to do for Him.

But Paul breaks down that old way of thinking. He explains that our peace with God is not a feeling; it is a position. It is a new status that God himself has given us through Christ.

The Bible calls this position justification. I was guilty, but Jesus made my relationship with God right. He bore my punishment. Therefore, I no longer stand under the accusation of the law; I have been declared righteous. I did not earn this by doing the right things. It is pure grace – this is what Jesus has done for me. My relationship with God has been restored, not because I improved, but because he made me a new person.

To be thankful for the Lord’s verdict of acquittal means I understand that I do not have to work for God’s love, and I do not have to live in fear of his judgment. I may come to him boldly, even in my brokenness, because Christ came for me. The peace I receive does not depend on my emotions; it is a fixed reality in God’s eyes. The fear of guilt and the tension of uncertainty are replaced by the certainty of his grace.

This peace changes how I live today. I can love without fear. I can serve without guilt. I can accept myself as I am accepted in Christ. Gratitude for justification is therefore not merely head knowledge – it is a transformation of the heart that frees me from fear and fills me with peace that surpasses all understanding.

It also reminds me that the gospel is practical. It does not only declare me righteous before God; but it also begins to transform my life. I no longer have to walk bowed down under the weight of guilt. I am free to rise and live as a child of God declared righteous.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you that through faith I have been justified and declared righteous. Thank you that I may live in peace with you – not based on my performance, but on your finished work. Help me to walk in this peace today and to hold firmly to the assurance that in you, I am accepted. Amen.
