Thankful for a new heart - 14 April 2026

Ewald Schmidt

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Ezekiel 36:26-27, NIV

One of the greatest misunderstandings about the Christian faith is that it is merely about following a set of rules. Many people think God just gives us a list of commands and expects us to obey them. But the Bible shows us something far deeper: God does not only change our behaviour – he changes our heart.

In Ezekiel, the Lord speaks to a people whose hearts had become spiritually hardened. Their hearts were like stone – cold, unfeeling, disobedient. Honestly, this is also the natural condition of every human being after the fall into sin. We may appear religious, but our hearts are not naturally directed toward God. Our desires most often revolve around ourselves.

Then comes God’s promise of grace: “I will give you a new heart.” Notice – this is God’s work. A person can adjust their behaviour for a time, but we cannot change our own hearts. True repentance is not self-improvement; it is a kind of rebirth.

The Lord promises to remove the heart of stone and give a heart of flesh – a living, tender heart that responds to him. Not just new rules on stone tablets, but a new disposition within. God gives us his Spirit to enable us to live according to his will. This means that we are no longer obedient merely out of duty; but it becomes a desire in our hearts.

Thankfulness for a new heart means acknowledging: if today I long to serve God, if I feel sorrow over sin, if I desire to read his Word – this is grace. It is the work of his Spirit in me, it did not originate from myself.

This truth also gives us hope. Even when I see my own weakness, I know that God is still at work shaping my heart. Sanctification is a process in which the new heart becomes increasingly visible in words, reactions, and priorities.

The gospel therefore does not only offer forgiveness for the past and hope for the future; but it also brings a new inner reality in the present. I am no longer trapped in old patterns. I am no longer the same person. In Christ, I have received a new heart.

Prayer: Lord, thank you that you have not only forgiven my sins but also made my heart new. Thank you for the work of your Spirit, which stirs new desires within me. Shape my heart more each day according to your will, so that my life may glorify you. Amen.
