Thankful that Jesus is my shepherd - 15 April 2026

Ewald Schmidt

'I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.  John 10:11, NIV

The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing. Psalm 23:1, NIV

The image of a shepherd is one of the most beautiful and meaningful images in the Bible. In Psalm 23, David expresses his trust: “The Lord is my shepherd.” Centuries later, Jesus personalises these words and says: “I am the good shepherd.” He makes it concrete. The good shepherd of Psalm 23 has a name – Jesus Christ.

Sheep are dependent animals. They are neither strong nor clever. They wander easily, they panic, and they cannot defend themselves against predators. This is not a flattering image of us as humans – but it is an honest one. We need guidance. We need protection. We need someone to bring us back home when we stray.

And this is exactly what Jesus does.

He leads. “He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters," (Psalm 23:2) Sometimes we do not understand his path. Sometimes we go through dark valleys. Yet even there, David says: “You are with me.” The Shepherd’s presence is more important than the comfort of the path.

He protects. Jesus says the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He literally did this on the cross. He stood between us and God’s judgment. He is not a hired hand but a shepherd who gives himself. If the greatest enemy – the grave – could not claim us because Jesus intervened, we need not live in fear.

He seeks. When a sheep wanders, the shepherd does not just say, “Sorry about that loss,” he goes searching until he finds him. How often has the Lord brought us back? Sometimes through a sermon, sometimes through a trial, sometimes through a gentle whisper in our conscience. He draws us back home again and again in love.

Gratitude that Jesus is my shepherd offers me rest in a restless world. I do not have to figure out the path of my life as if everything depends on me. I can simply follow. I can simply trust. Even when I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I am not alone.

To have Jesus as shepherd means I belong to him. I am not a lost animal without an owner. I am his – purchased with his blood, carried on his shoulders, guided by his hand.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you that you are my good shepherd. Thank you that you lead me, protect me, and bring me back when I stray. Help me to recognise your voice and follow you faithfully, trusting you in and with every season of my life. Amen.
