Thankful for his peace that surpasses understanding - 29 April 2029

Ewald Schmidt

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7, NIV

We live in a world where many things can cause anxiety. There are worries about health, work, family and the future. Sometimes it feels as if our minds never quiet down. We try to find solutions, make plans and take control, but still, the unrest remains in our hearts.

It is precisely in such a world that God gives his children a wonderful promise: his peace.

Paul wrote these words while he himself was in the midst of an extremely difficult situation. He was not in a comfortable place when he wrote them – he was in prison. Yet he spoke of peace – not ordinary peace, but a peace that surpasses all understanding.

This does not mean that this peace can always be explained logically. Sometimes a believer experiences a deep calm and trust in God, even when the situation has not yet changed. One might expect panic or despair, but God gives us a tranquillity that does not come from our circumstances.

Paul also teaches us how to experience this peace. He says: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." (Philippians 4:6, NIV)

God invites us to bring everything to him – our fears, our questions, and our worries. We do not need to hide anything. When we pray, we place our burdens into his hands. And alongside our prayers comes thanksgiving – the reminder that God has already done so much for us and remains faithful.

Then something remarkable happens: God’s peace guards our hearts and minds.

The image Paul uses is that of soldiers standing watch over a city. God’s peace stands watch over our inner life so that fear and despair do not have the final word.

What a reason for gratitude! Our peace does not depend on good/perfect circumstances. Our peace rests in Christ himself. Because we belong to him, we can rest in the assurance that our lives are in God’s hands.

Even when the world around us is restless, God gives us a peace that quiets our hearts.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the peace you give – a peace that is higher than my understanding. Help me to bring my worries to you and to trust in you. Guard my heart and mind with your peace, so that I can live calmly, trusting you in every circumstance. Amen.
