Don’t be afraid - 8 July 2026

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27, NIV
When Christ’s peace rules in our hearts, gratitude and joy naturally follow. In John 14:27, Jesus speaks these words to his disciples shortly before he is crucified. Although difficult times awaited them, he promised them a peace different from anything the world could offer. It is not a peace dependent on favourable circumstances, but a peace grounded in God’s presence and kindness.
The world often links joy to success, comfort or the absence of problems. When things go well, people feel happy; when challenges come, that joy can quickly fade. However, the joy that flows from a relationship with Christ works differently. It is sustained by the knowledge that God loves us, that he is with us, and that he remains in control even when life feels difficult and uncertain.
Gratitude plays an important role in this joy. When we intentionally pause to reflect on God’s goodness, our focus begins to shift from our problems to his presence. We remember his faithfulness in the past, experience his compassion in the present, and trust him for the future. These reminders produce joy because we realise that we are never alone.
Jesus’ words, “Do not let your heart be troubled and do not be afraid”, are not merely a command; they are an invitation to rest in his peace. When we live with grateful hearts, we become less consumed by worry and fear. We learn to recognise God’s blessings even in difficult seasons. A thankful heart often discovers joy in places where others may only see problems.
This does not mean that believers never experience suffering or disappointment, it means that our joy is not determined by those circumstances. Our joy is anchored in Christ, therefore it can remain steady even when the storms of life come.
Today, take time to thank God for the peace he gives through Jesus Christ. Reflect on his faithfulness, his love and his constant presence in your life. Let gratitude fill your heart and rediscover the joy that comes from knowing that the Lord is with you. His peace brings rest, and his presence gives us true joy.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for the peace you give me – a peace the world cannot give or take away. Help me to live with a grateful heart and to find my joy in you. When I face challenges or fears, remind me of your presence and faithfulness. Fill my heart with your peace and let my life overflow with joy for your glory. Amen.
