Peace of Christ - 9 July 2026
Ruanne van Zyl
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15, NIV
Paul encourages believers to allow the peace of Christ to rule in their hearts and adds a simple yet powerful instruction: “And be thankful.” Paul seemingly understood that a grateful heart provides the perfect soil for God’s peace to flourish.
Much of the unrest we experience as humans comes from our focusing on what is wrong, what is missing or what we cannot control. We worry about the future, struggle with disappointments from the past and often feel overwhelmed by the challenges of the present. However, when we intentionally practice gratitude, our perspective begins to shift. We become less focused on our problems and more aware of God’s presence, provision and faithfulness.
Gratitude does not mean pretending that difficulties do not exist. Rather, it means choosing to recognise God’s goodness in the midst of them. Even on the hardest days, there are still reasons to give thanks. We can be grateful for God’s unchanging love, for his mercies that are new every morning and for his promise that he will never leave us nor forsake us.
When we live with gratitude, our hearts also become more tender toward others. We begin to appreciate the value of relationships and recognise the people God has placed in our lives to encourage, support and love us. Gratitude helps us complain less and appreciate more. It replaces dissatisfaction with contentment and joy, and helps us see blessings where we once saw burdens.
The peace Paul describes is not dependent on perfect circumstances. It is the peace of Christ that lives deep within us, even when the world around us feels unsteady and chaotic. Gratitude helps us experience that peace because it continually reminds us of God’s faithfulness and care. As we remember his goodness, our confidence in him grows, and our fears begin to lose their hold.
Today, you have an opportunity to refocus your heart on God. Take time to thank him for his blessings, both great and small. Reflect on the people, opportunities and gifts that God has placed in your life. The more we practice gratitude, the more we discover the peace that only Christ can give – a peace that guards our hearts and minds and anchors us in his love.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the peace that you give through Christ. Help me not to become consumed by problems and worries, but to recognise your goodness every day. Make me someone who is grateful for your blessings and who glorifies your name. Fill my heart with your peace and teach me to live with joy, faith and gratitude. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
