Things that last - 20 April 2015

For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy. 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
When we think of "crown," we think of a king's crown. But the word Paul uses indicates a laurel wreath that was awarded to the winning runner or athlete in the games. Paul uses this image in 1 Corinthians:
"Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever." (1 Corinthians 9:25)
All of Paul’s converts, not the just the Thessalonians, are his "crown" or prize. The Galatians are the evidence that he has not "run in vain" (Galatians 2:2). He calls the Philippian believers, "my joy and my crown" (Philippians 4:1). These converts in Thessalonica will be the basis of his glorying "in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes." Paul takes pride in everyone with whom he has shared the gospel and shared his life.
At some point, we all think about the things that will last after we are gone, and what is therefore worth putting our life’s energy into. Most people, regardless of their faith can agree that it's wise to spend your life doing something meaningful and to leave a lasting legacy. As Paul shows us here in 1 Thessalonians, for us Christians, what will last is the love we show to others. When Paul thinks about what he will have that he can hold up before Jesus at the Lord's return, he thinks immediately of the people he has loved with the gracious, self-giving love of Christ, and he is satisfied.
Today, let us do something that matters, something that will last. Today, let us love others by sharing Jesus with them.
Prayer: Lord, give us the vision and wisdom to see moments, even brief instants, when we can show your love and share your gospel with the people whom you have placed in our lives.
